Fake Medicines

The Right to Information (RTI) Act can be used to address fake medicines entering into markets in the following ways:

Here is an example of how the RTI Act has been used to address fake medicines:

In 2012, an RTI activist filed an RTI application with the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) to ask for information about the government's efforts to combat fake medicines. The RTI application revealed that the CDSCO had not taken any action against a number of companies that had been found to be selling fake medicines. The RTI activist filed a complaint with the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC), which is an anti-corruption watchdog. The CVC investigated the complaint and found that the CDSCO had indeed been negligent in its efforts to combat fake medicines. The CVC recommended that the CDSCO take action against the companies that had been found to be selling fake medicines. The CDSCO subsequently took action against the companies and seized a large quantity of fake medicines.

This is just one example of how the RTI Act can be used to address the problem of fake medicines. By using the RTI Act, citizens can obtain information about the government's efforts to combat fake medicines, identify gaps in the government's efforts, and demand that the government take action to protect public health.
