Public Audit

A public audit is an independent examination of how a government agency or department has used public money. The purpose of a public audit is to ensure that public money has been used properly and efficiently. Public audits are typically conducted by an independent auditor, such as the Auditor General.

Public audits can be used to identify a variety of problems, including:

Public audits can also be used to identify areas where government agencies or departments can improve their performance. For example, a public audit may find that a government agency is not collecting all of the taxes that it is owed. This finding may lead to changes in the way that the government agency collects taxes.

Public audits are an important tool for ensuring that public money is used properly and efficiently. They can help to identify problems, such as waste, fraud, and corruption. They can also help to identify areas where government agencies or departments can improve their performance.

The Right to Information (RTI) Act and public audit can be combined to eradicate corruption in the following ways:

Here is an example of how RTI and public audit can be used to eradicate corruption:

In 2011, an RTI activist filed an RTI application with the Delhi government to ask for information about the details of a project to build a flyover. The RTI application revealed that the project had been delayed for several years and that the cost of the project had increased significantly. The RTI activist filed a complaint against the government officials who were responsible for the delay in the project. The complaint led to an investigation, which found that the government officials had indeed been involved in corruption. The government officials were suspended and the project was cancelled.

This is just one example of how RTI and public audit can be used to eradicate corruption. By combining these two tools, we can make it more difficult for corrupt officials to operate and we can hold them accountable for their actions.
